Tesla Model Y and Model 3 V2L and Powershare: the adapter and hardware you pay for
Event date The day Drive Tesla Canada reported the US expansion. Powershare covers cars ordered after October 1, 2026, plus some earlier builds. US
What happened
On October 6, 2026, Drive Tesla Canada reported that Tesla had added vehicle-to-load (V2L) to every Model 3 and Model Y trim in the United States, and extended Powershare home backup to Model 3 and Model Y ordered after October 1, 2026. The car side is included. To use it you buy hardware: Tesla's $80 outlet adapter for V2L (Electrek, August 15, 2026), and a Powerwall 3 for home backup.

Two features, two different shopping lists
People often lump V2L and Powershare together, but they solve different problems and need different hardware. V2L means the car powers a device plugged into an outlet. Powershare means the car backs up your house during an outage. Both are now on far more US Teslas than a few months ago, and neither works without a purchase outside the car.
| Feature | What it does | Hardware you buy | Reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| V2L | Up to 2.4 kW at 120 V and 20 A from a household-style outlet | Tesla's outlet adapter, $80; it clips onto the Gen 3 Mobile Connector | Electrek, August 15, 2026; Drive Tesla Canada, October 6, 2026 |
| Powershare home backup | Powers the home in an outage: up to two days on RWD, more than two days on Premium, more than three on Cybertruck (Tesla's claims) | Powerwall 3; Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support "coming soon" | Drive Tesla Canada, October 6, 2026 |
How V2L reached the cheaper trims
When Electrek covered the adapter on August 15, 2026, V2L was limited to Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance and Cybertruck. Model Y Standard and every Model 3 were left out, and Electrek called that trim strategy rather than engineering. By October 6, Drive Tesla Canada reported V2L across the whole US Model 3 and Model Y line-up. The adapter is the same $80 part Tesla launched for Cybertruck in April 2025, according to Electrek, and you can add it in the configurator or buy it from the Tesla Shop.
Check before you buy an inventory car
Powershare is tied to the order date, with some earlier builds included. If you are looking at an inventory car or a recent used one, do not assume. Drive Tesla Canada gives the path in the car: Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. A compatible car shows "Powershare Support" there. Ask the seller to show you that screen before you pay.
Who this affects
US buyers who want camping or job-site power from the car, and homeowners who want the car as backup. For V2L, the extra cost is the adapter. For backup, the real cost is a Powerwall 3 and its installation, which a Tesla Energy quote prices for your home. We do not print an install price, because it varies by home and installer.
What has not changed
- Car prices. Nothing in these reports changes what the car costs.
- Canada. Drive Tesla Canada reports that no similar Powershare change has been announced for Canada, though V2L recently reached Model Y Premium there.
- No code discounts the hardware. Coupon sites listing "Tesla promo codes" for adapters or Powerwall are not Tesla offers. In the United States the referral link gives a buyer 3 months of FSD (Supervised) on our October 4, 2026 capture, and that is the only buyer benefit Tesla shows through a link.
What to do
- Want outlet power: budget the $80 outlet adapter, either in the configurator or from the Tesla Shop.
- Want home backup: get a Powerwall 3 quote for your home first. Without it, Powershare does nothing.
- Buying inventory or used: check Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information for "Powershare Support" before paying.
- Have Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+: Tesla says support is coming. Do not pay for a car on the promise alone.
