Why a Tesla from inventory can cost less than one you order
Short answer
Tesla does not discount custom orders with codes, but it does price individual cars already built, its inventory, below what the same configuration costs to order, and its demo cars typically cost less again. Tesla's own support page says demo vehicles "typically have faster delivery and a lower purchase price". Under Tesla's referral terms a new inventory car can still be bought through a referral link; a pre-owned one cannot.

The one place Tesla's price visibly moves
Search for a Tesla discount and you will find coupon pages, giveaway posts and referral links described as "codes". None of those changes the price Tesla charges for a car you design yourself. What does move, and what Tesla shows openly, is the price of cars that already exist: new cars built and waiting for a buyer, and demo cars that have been used for test drives or showroom display. That is Tesla's inventory, and it is where a lower number than the configurator's is normal rather than suspicious.
Three kinds of car on Tesla's site
| Custom order | New inventory | Demo vehicle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Built to the configuration you choose | Already built, never sold | "Used for demonstration purposes, such as demo drives or showroom staging" |
| Registered before? | No | No | "Has not been previously registered or titled" |
| Price versus ordering | The configurator price | Set per car; can be lower | "Typically" lower, in Tesla's words |
| Delivery | Varies by model and location | "More immediate delivery" | "Typically" faster |
| How to tell on the listing | — | Listed in Tesla's inventory | A "Demo Vehicle" label at the top left of the listing card |
| Referral link applies? (US terms) | Yes | Yes: "custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle" | Not addressed by name; ask Tesla |

Why stock cars are priced differently
Tesla does not publish how it prices individual inventory cars, so we will not invent a formula. What its own pages and dated reports show is a pattern of conditions, not a secret discount:
- The configuration is fixed. You take the colour, wheels and options the car was built with. A custom order lets you choose; a stock car is priced to move as it is.
- Demo cars have been used. Tesla's demo-vehicle page says normal wear "indicative of the age and mileage of the vehicle should be expected", and that the odometer reflects demo drives or showroom use.
- Timing. Some inventory offers carry a deadline tied to delivery. The Chinese offer below required delivery by the last day of a quarter.
Inventory price moves are dated events
Two recent examples, both reported by the press rather than read by us on Tesla's site, show what these offers look like in practice:
- China, September 2026. CnEVPost reported on September 7, 2026 that Tesla China was offering ¥10,000 off the final payment on in-stock Model Y cars and ¥5,000 off in-stock Model 3 cars, for orders delivered by September 30. That offer has ended. Details in our Offer watch item on China's quarter-end inventory offer.
- Australia, October 2026. The Driven reported on October 5, 2026 that in-stock Model Y cars showed A$2,950 off drive-away prices in the ACT, NSW, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. See the Australian inventory item.
Both share the same features: the reduction applied to cars already built, not to custom orders; it was limited by place or by delivery date; and it was visible on the listing itself, with no code to enter. That is the honest answer to "is there a Tesla discount?": sometimes, on specific stock cars, for a limited period, shown in plain sight on Tesla's inventory pages.
What "new" still means for an inventory or demo car
A new inventory car is new in every sense. A demo car is the case people worry about. Tesla's demo-vehicle page says such cars are "typically considered new vehicles as they have not been previously registered or titled to another individual", and tells buyers to check with their local DMV. It says each demo car has "passed an internal cosmetic and mechanical inspection", and prints the limits it allows: paint scratches up to 1 inch in one direction, wheel scratches or chips under 6 inches, at least 5/32 inch of tyre tread and at least 6 mm of brake pad. Demo cars are covered by Tesla's Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty and Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty, according to the same page; ask your Tesla location when that warranty clock starts for the specific car.
Those inspection limits and the DMV wording come from Tesla's US page. Outside the US, the rules on registration status and warranty start are set locally; ask Tesla in your country, in writing, before paying.
Does a referral link still apply to an inventory car?
For new inventory, yes, in Tesla's US terms: "Pre-owned vehicles are not qualifying products for the Refer and Earn program. You must custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link to qualify for the program." Canada and Puerto Rico use the same sentence; the other English-language terms we read say "Certified Pre-Owned" instead. Demo cars are not named either way. Because Tesla treats a demo car as new but not as a custom order, check the order summary for the referral line before paying the order fee. Whatever kind of car it is, the referral link must be opened before you order; Tesla's terms say it cannot be credited afterwards.
The referral benefit is the same on an inventory car as on a custom order in the same country, because it is printed per model, not per car. In the matrix that is FSD (Supervised) months in North America, a Supercharging distance in most of Europe and the Gulf, and cash in several Asia-Pacific countries. Tesla's pages do not say that an inventory price reduction and a referral benefit exclude each other. The order summary is where you see whether both apply to the car in front of you.
How to compare an inventory car with a custom order
- Configure the car you would order, and write down the total, including any destination or delivery fee Tesla adds.
- Find the closest match in your country's inventory. Note what differs: colour, wheels, interior, options, and for demo cars the odometer.
- Compare the totals, not the headline prices. A cheaper stock car with an option you would not have paid for may still be the better deal; one missing an option you need is not.
- Check delivery timing. Inventory often delivers sooner, which can matter if an incentive or a price ends on a date.
- Open a referral link for your own country, then select the inventory car from that same session and confirm the referral line on the order summary.
What to check before paying the order fee
- The fee is non-refundable. Tesla's US ordering page says you pay "a one-time, non-refundable order fee with a credit card" when ordering, for both new and demo cars.
- The listing label. "Demo Vehicle" at the top left means a used-for-demonstration car; no label means new inventory.
- The price on the listing. Any reduction should already be in the listed price. Nobody needs to send you a code for it.
- The deadline. If the reduction is tied to delivery by a date, confirm the delivery appointment fits before you commit.
- Payment channels. Tesla's US page lists final payment by electronic check in the Tesla app, wire transfer, or certified check at delivery, from a single account. Payment instructions arriving any other way deserve suspicion; see the final-payment scam note.
