Tesla Model Y in Denmark: the 2027 registration-tax proposal and why delivery day decides

Event date Date of Mobility Denmark's release on the government's finance-bill proposal. The finance act is not yet passed. DK

What happened

Denmark's government has proposed, in its 2027 finance-bill plan, lowering the price at which an electric car starts paying registration tax from about DKK 419,000 to about DKK 366,000 from January 1, 2027. Mobility Denmark estimated on September 28, 2026 that this adds almost DKK 28,000 on a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. The tax follows the registration date, so a car delivered after New Year pays the new rate if the proposal passes.

What the government has proposed

Danish registration tax on electric cars is being phased in over several years. The government's finance-bill proposal for 2027 lowers the threshold, meaning more of an EV's price becomes taxable. Mobility Denmark, the industry body, published its estimate through Ritzau on September 28, 2026 and urged the government to drop the change in budget talks.

CarEstimated extra tax in 2027
Tesla Model Y Long Range AWDAlmost DKK 28,000
Volkswagen ID.4 StyleAbout DKK 10,300

These are an industry body's estimates, not Tesla's prices. Whether Tesla absorbs or passes on the tax is Tesla's decision, and it shows up only on Tesla's Danish site.

The detail most coverage skips: registration day

FDM, the Danish motorists' association, put it plainly on May 27, 2026: the tax depends on when the car is registered, not when the order is signed. A Model Y ordered in October but registered on January 5 pays 2027 tax. That makes the delivery date the number to chase, not the order date.

It may not happen on January 1

This is a proposal. The phase-in has been postponed before, and FDM wrote in May 2026 that another one-year postponement was likely. Until the 2027 finance act is passed, treat both the threshold and the DKK 28,000 estimate as possible, not settled.

Who this affects

Danish buyers of an EV priced above about DKK 366,000 whose car could register in 2027. Cars priced below the proposed threshold would pay no registration tax under the proposal, as Mobility Denmark describes it.

What has not changed

  • 2026 rules apply to cars registered in 2026.
  • The referral benefit. Denmark showed 1,000 km of free Supercharging on Model 3 and 1,000 km of free Supercharging on Model Y, on our capture of Tesla's Denmark referral page dated August 29, 2026. It is distance, not money, and it does not offset registration tax.
  • No promo code. Registration tax is set by the state, not by Tesla or a code.

What to do

  • Ordering a Model Y now: ask Tesla in writing for a delivery and registration date, and whether it falls before December 31, 2026.
  • If it may slip, ask how Tesla will handle the price if the 2027 rate applies.
  • Watch the final 2027 finance act. FDM has said another postponement is possible.
  • Compare inventory cars that can be registered this year with an order that delivers in 2027.
