Tesla changed the referral benefit after you ordered: which one do you get?
Short answer
Tesla's terms say the Refer and Earn program is "subject to change" but do not say which benefit applies when a country's offer changes between your order and your delivery. What they do say is that a link must be used when you order and cannot be added later. So the record that matters is your order: what Tesla's page and your order showed on the day you placed it.

Real 2026 changes, dated
This is not a hypothetical. Between the earliest 2026 capture and the latest one we hold, 31 countries changed what their referral page listed. Most of the changes were Model S and Model X leaving the page, but several touched cars people were ordering at the time:

Some of these moves helped buyers (Model Y gaining cash in Malaysia and Thailand) and some did not (Cybertruck cash giving way to a software trial). The full list is on the changelog, and the Malaysia and Thailand change has its own Offer watch item.
What the terms say about changes and timing
Tesla's US terms (Tesla's US terms, archived June 15, 2026) give four relevant lines. Participants "understand that they are subject to change". "Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order." After a friend orders, the referrer's benefit shows as "pending" in the Tesla app "until the Grant Date". And: "Tesla's Refer and Earn program will not remain open indefinitely. If benefits are not used during the timeframe of the program, we reserve the right to cancel the benefits once the program ends."
What the terms do not say is the thing buyers ask most: if your country's benefit changes after you order, do you keep the one you ordered with, or get the new one? Tesla is silent on that. We will not guess, and nobody outside Tesla can promise you either answer. The UK and UAE terms we archived are just as silent.
Why a referral can't be added after ordering
The link works by tagging your order at the moment you place it. The terms say so twice: links "cannot be applied after you place your order" and "cannot be credited after the order is placed". That has a practical consequence when an offer improves. If you ordered a Model Y in Malaysia in July without a link, because Model Y showed nothing then, the RM 1,000 that appeared in August cannot be attached to that order later. If you did order through a link in July, your order was tagged; whether Tesla then applies the newer figure is the question the terms leave open.
Cancelling and re-ordering to catch a new benefit is a decision with its own costs: order fees, delivery slots and price changes. Ask Tesla what happens to your deposit and your place before you do it.
Document what your page showed
Because the terms are silent, your own record is your best evidence. On the day you order, save:
- A screenshot of the referral page showing the country (the address bar with the locale, such as
en_my), the model card and its benefit line. - The date and time, ideally visible in the screenshot.
- Your order confirmation, and the order page in your Tesla account if it lists the referral benefit.
- The link you used. You do not need to publish it; keep it with your records.
- Optionally, the Internet Archive capture nearest to that date (how to find one), which is independent evidence of what Tesla's page showed.
If Tesla's confirmation shows a different benefit
Raise it with Tesla before delivery, not after. Tesla is the only party that can see how your order was tagged. Share your screenshot and order details and ask two questions: was the order placed through the referral link, and which benefit does Tesla apply to it. If the honest answer is that Tesla changed the country's offer and the newer one applies, that is Tesla's decision under terms that say they can change. If the order was not tagged at all, the cause is usually earlier: the link opened in another browser, a different Tesla account, or a capped owner's link (why captures sometimes disagree).
Program end: "will not remain open indefinitely"
The last risk is the biggest one. Tesla can close the program in a country, and it has done so: its Korean terms say referral links stopped being active on July 1, 2025 (South Korea). The terms reserve the right to cancel benefits not used during the program's timeframe once it ends. If you are holding a Supercharging credit or a trial, use it within its window rather than banking on it.
What to do
- Before ordering, check your country's current line in the matrix and on Tesla's page.
- Order through the link, on the same account, and save the evidence listed above.
- If the offer changes before delivery, ask Tesla which benefit applies, in writing, with your screenshot.
