Tesla Cybertruck trade-in in Canada: Tesla Canada is not accepting them, and tariffs keep new prices high
Event date The day Drive Tesla Canada reported the refusals. The counter-tariff package it cites took effect on September 8, 2026. CA
What happened
Drive Tesla Canada reported on August 20, 2026 that Tesla Canada told Cybertruck owners it "does not currently accept Cybertrucks as trade-ins". In the United States, Tesla has taken them since May 2025. The same report says tariffs on US-built vehicles have pushed new Canadian Cybertruck prices as high as $167,990, and Canada's existing counter-tariffs on US autos still apply after the September 8, 2026 package.

What owners were told
Drive Tesla Canada described two owners who tried to trade in their trucks, one at about 72,000 km and nearly two years old, the other at 120,000 km. One contacted Tesla about an extended warranty first; Tesla Canada told him it does not currently accept Cybertrucks as trade-ins. The publication adds that no extended warranty is offered on Cybertruck in Canada or the United States. Tesla gave no reason; Drive Tesla Canada suggests that tariffs and high new prices make resale values hard to predict, which is its reading, not Tesla's.
The tariff side

Canada's C$27.6 billion package of 15%, 25% and 50% counter-tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026, reported Drive Tesla Canada on September 10. It targeted goods such as steel, dairy and appliances and added no new Tesla-specific tariff; the Department of Finance confirmed that existing counter-tariffs, including those on US autos, continue to apply. The Shanghai-built Model 3 pays the 6.1% most-favoured-nation rate instead. Tesla announced no Canadian price change with the package.
Who this affects
Canadian Cybertruck owners who want to move into another Tesla, and Canadian shoppers pricing a new truck. An owner who planned to roll the truck's value into a new order cannot count on a trade-in credit from Tesla. A buyer of a new Cybertruck should assume the same may apply when they come to sell.
What did not change
- US trade-ins. Tesla still takes Cybertrucks in the United States, as far as these reports go.
- Model 3's tariff treatment. Still the 6.1% MFN rate, not a counter-tariff.
- The referral benefit. Our capture of Tesla's Canadian referral page on October 5, 2026 lists 3 months of FSD (Supervised) on Cybertruck. It does not change the price or the trade-in rules.
Selling the truck yourself
Without a Tesla trade-in, the options are a third-party dealer, a used-EV buyer or a private sale. Get two or three written quotes before you place a new order, so the money you plan to put down is real. If you are ordering a new Tesla in the meantime, keep the two transactions separate: the order should stand on its own price. Our note on whether you can negotiate a Tesla price explains what is fixed and what is not. The US side of the Cybertruck price story is in our item on the US Cybertruck price increase.
Trade-in policy is as reported by Drive Tesla Canada on August 20, 2026. Ask Tesla Canada directly before you order; the word "currently" in its answer means this can change.
What to do
- Ask Tesla Canada in writing whether it takes your Cybertruck before you build a new order around a trade-in.
- Get written quotes from a third-party dealer or used-EV buyer, or price a private sale, before you order.
- Shopping a new Cybertruck in Canada: read the current price on Tesla's Canadian site and plan the eventual sale without counting on Tesla to buy it back.
- Don't expect a code or referral link to change the trade-in rules. It doesn't.
